Twisty evolved out of my Teenage Engineering op-z synth and sequencer. The twisty, wobbly lead line uses the deep tweakability of the op-z’s step sequencer to great effect. I love how a whole song comes together from that kind of happy accident. Through listening parties with the Subsine Academy Ableton Live Artist course and with Rachel K Collier’s Patreon community I have refined the track into what you hear today. I took the final stems and Ableton set and offered it to artists on Werra Foxma that had contributed to the Blue Scream compilation and I’m delighted that Autmna, Bendu, Rei Nakatani and Thomas Ragsdale stepped up to help transform the initial tune.
Rei Nakatani’s remix features his trademark tight, lean production. The original ideas are stripped back and projected 5 minutes into a pristine future. Bendu’s remix on the other hand deconstructs the original, tortures and distorts it and presents it back in an unsettling mix. By the time we get to Autumna’s mix the twisty lead is a distant echo of a half-remembered tune from the night before wrapped in melancholy and regret. Thomas Ragsdale’s Sulk Rooms mix takes this to the extreme - stretching and smearing the original sound so that all that is left is the essence of the original, barely recognisable. The drone is uncomfortable in its build but it resolves in the end to acceptance and resolution.
I grew up with singles and remixes like this set. Hearing how different artists interpret the original is inspiring and accentuates their own production style and aesthetic. I’m honoured that these great artists collaborated with me and took time to meld their own style with my sounds. I hope you find something to enjoy in this single.
